What is a Marriage and Family Counselor?

Marriage and family counselor definition: A marriage and family counselor is a mental health therapist who helps couples and families improve their relationships. We provide counseling and psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families.

Licensed marriage and family counselors in the United States have a master's degree in psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a related field. Different states have different criteria for qualifying to take the licensing exam. In California, you must complete 3000 hours of supervised client work to qualify to take the exam.

Once you have passed the California Board of Behavioral Sciences Marriage and Family Therapy licensing exam, you must stay current on psychotherapy topics by completing continuing education to renew your license.

The official title in California is Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

What Does a Marriage and Family Counselor Do?

My job as a Marriage and Family Therapist is to help you improve your relationships. My license allows me to work with individuals, couples, or families.

I provide counseling services to resolve conflicts, improve communication, understand and cope with life changes and how they impact you and your relationships, and treat mental health conditions.

How Does Solution Focused Marriage and Family Counseling Work?

In solution focused marriage and family counseling, I work with you to identify the outcome you are hoping for so you can find solutions that fit your situation.

Everyone is involved in the process. In these situations, the relationship is my client, not each individual person. The idea is to work as a team.

With solution-based therapy, we will hone in on solutions that work for everyone involved. There will be time for everyone's ideas.

There are several ways solution focused marriage and family counseling can work. It is common for the first request to be about communication.

Different communication styles and different ways of interpretation can be addressed to increase understanding and empathy. Then, we see what works best for all involved. Knowing your best communication style can help reduce and resolve conflict while you build a stronger relationship.

Working with a solution focused mindset can improve your relationships by helping you see different perspectives and past successes that add up to new solutions that are unique and fit your current issues.

Solutions that involve all viewpoints and ideas tend to work better than standard techniques from a manual. There are no one-size-fits-all answers.

a different kind of therapy.

a different kind of therapist.

Therapy with Me is About You Living the Life You Want.

You probably think therapy is getting advice from your therapist about how to live your life better. And you probably think it's going to be lengthy, emotionally painful and expensive.

I don't practice that kind of therapy.

I don't think that I know how to live your life better than you do. No one knows that better than you. You understand your needs and in adult counseling you will be treated with respect and kindness. I will never ask you to do or say anything that makes you uncomfortable.

In our sessions, we will explore your best hopes for our work together and how you can reach your hopes. We will focus on building the future you want, not spend time re-traumatizing you with difficult things from your past.

You know how to build your brightest future. By very carefully listening to you, I will be able to ask you the right questions that will lead you to your own answers for your life.

If all of this sounds good to you, then I might be the therapist for you. I'm a mental health therapist online California. I enjoy working online. It increases flexibility for both of us and is more convenient than traveling to appointments.

Long Live Teletherapy!

Photo of a woman jumping.

You can become the strong, independent and resilient person you want to be. Positive emotions can help you heal and transform without the pain of reliving traumatic past experiences.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, my practice is entirely online. You know what?

I think teletherapy is great.

We can do teletherapy together from anywhere in California.

I have been offering teletherapy for 4 1/2 years. Before COVID, about a quarter of my clients were out of my area and seeing me online. Now, my entire practice is online. Teletherapy makes therapy more accessible. There are so many benefits for my clients and I.

Chronic illness clients benefit because they don’t have to travel. If you're stuck in bed, that's OK, because you can still get the support you need. You have more therapists to choose from, since chronic illness is not a popular specialty. With teletherapy, you can choose from therapists statewide. You don’t have to depend on a caregiver for transportation. Teletherapy promotes your independence.

As a parent, you'll love adult counseling online. Teletherapy doesn’t require a sitter for your kids. Teletherapy is a serious time-saver -- you don't to travel to and from your appointment. Many parents schedule therapy on their lunch hour. You can sit in your private office or in your car and log in on your phone. Therapy for couples and families works well online. Families with adult children tend to live in different areas of the state. With teletherapy, you can all meet for sessions online and avoid problems finding a good time for everyone because of travel. As a couple, you can even do therapy at lunch from different locations.

Teens really resonate with online therapy. Teens are extremely comfortable with technology. Online therapy meets them in their element, instead of expecting them to enter an unfamiliar office environment. Being online gives them anonymity, if they want it.

Online therapy is empowering for teens. They don’t need to make appointments around their parent’s schedule for transportation. They get to choose where their appointment takes place. I have met with teens online while they walk in nature, in their room, in a car in their driveway, and at a friend’s house, so there’s no chance they will be heard or interrupted. Teens have the power to end a session at any moment with just the click of a button if they desire. Knowing they have that power is very empowering.

Online therapy offers a different kind of privacy than in-person therapy. You can choose a therapist who lives far enough away that you will never bump into each other in your local grocery store. I work with lots of clients in Southern California. I live over 8 hours away. I will never meet them in person. I do see my local clients around town. I follow ethics rules and never initiate conversation. They sometimes come up and say hi, though. Some are thankful I don't initiate contact and continue on without engaging. With distance teletherapy, that awkward moment doesn't present itself.

While teletherapy isn't for everyone, I think it's fantastic. I recommend that you give it a try.

Single Session Therapy

Therapy does not need to take a long time. One shift in your thinking can lead you to a significant insight. That insight can change your life.

One new way of seeing something can change your thinking in other ways. In turn, that new thinking can lead you to other changes.

This virtuous cycle can begin to run on its own. It's almost as though you set up dominoes to be knocked down.

In very little time, you can replace your old problem-creating thinking patterns for new solution-focused thinking.

Therapy for couples and families can often resolve issues in one or two sessions.

Please keep in mind that I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in

California, Nevada, and Florida.

That means that I can only work with people who are located in California, Nevada, or Florida.

To answer a question people often ask, "What if I'm traveling?"

Here's the answer:

The law requires two things at the same time -

(1) You must be in a state where the therapist is licensed (2) when you receive therapy services.
